We’re pleased to announce the launch of a joint openEHR–OMOP Working Group, a collaborative initiative bringing together two major global ecosystems in health data interoperability.
The group is led by Dr. Somayeh Abedian, openEHR Fellow and official representative of openEHR International, who brings extensive expertise in health data standards, semantic modeling and interoperability frameworks. Dr. Abedian has been an active contributor to the openEHR community and has played a significant role in promoting collaboration between clinical and research data environments.
Purpose & Vision
This working group builds on the growing alignment between openEHR and Health Level Seven International FHIR, expanding the collaboration to include the OMOP Common Data Model (CDM). Its mission is to bridge openEHR’s clinical modeling framework with OMOP-CDM to enable large-scale data reuse and real-world evidence generation, while maintaining clinical meaning and semantic consistency across platforms.
Key Focus Areas
Developing practical tools and mappings between openEHR archetypes/templates and OMOP-CDM entities. Identifying governance and standardization touchpoints to enhance data quality and alignment. Establishing community-driven workflows to connect clinical care and research ecosystems. Exploring AI-assisted transformation tools to accelerate semantic interoperability. Building a sustainable bridge in interoperability domain and between openEHR, FHIR, and OMOP for the secondary use of real-world data.
If you are interested in interoperability, clinical modeling, or real-world evidence, this is an opportunity to join an international collaboration advancing health data standardisation and reuse.
Through collaborative leadership and shared expertise, this working group will strengthen the link between openEHR and OMOP, enabling more meaningful, interoperable and reusable health data worldwide.
I’m interested.
I (together with @heidi.koikkalainen and @David-Jobling and @ian.mcnicoll ) have proposed a project to a potential customer. My/our availability at least partially depends on that proposal being accepted.
Thanks, Joost. You are now registered and added to the group. Hopefully everything goes well with your proposal. I’m looking forward to hearing good news from your side!
I am interested in joining the openEHR & OMOP working group to both learn and actively contribute.
I recently came across openEHR, and through that I discovered OHDSI, its Common Data Model (CDM), and OMOP. I find this ecosystem and its approach to standardized, interoperable health data very exciting and would like to deepen my understanding while supporting the group’s ongoing work.
Could you please add me to the openEHR & OMOP working group
Thank you for your kind reminder. Unfortunately, not this year, as all talks and sessions have already been closed. Hopefully, we will be there next year
Hi Elanchezhian,
Thanks for your interest! Great to hear about your motivation to learn and contribute. I’ll add you to the openEHR & OMOP working group. Welcome!
