Looking for templates for Master Thesis on mapping from Structured reports to openEHR

Hello everyone,

We are two students at Linköping University doing our master thesis at Sectra focused on mapping from structured reporting templates (explained here as structured reporting, not DICOM) to openEHR templates, and how this process can be simplified. The intention is to simplify the manual creation of mapping scripts etc. that can then be used to convert selected SR report instances to corresponding openEHR Composition instances.

To do this we have gathered SR templates and are searching for equivalent openEHR templates. We have tried looking through the international CKM but are coming up empty-handed, so we turn to you for help.

The SR templates we currently have are: MRI of the prostate, macroscopic analysis of breast tissue, ergospirometry, blood pressure monitoring over 24 hours, and ultrasound of the left and right carotid. If anyone has openEHR templates that matches these descriptions (or close enough) and can share them, it would be greatly appreciated. Preferred languages are English or Swedish, but we can most likely use Google Translate for other languages.

Other ideas and experiences regarding mapping approaches, tooling etc are also very welcome.

Can I suggest we move this to the Clinical category? ‘Community’ is a moderated space, so it is harder for conversations.

Hi Klara! The international CKM contains very few templates in general, and those which are there are mainly intended as examples. Regarding your use cases, some of those templates should be fairly simple to construct using existing archetypes, depending on the level of details required. Others, like macroscopic analysis of breast tissue for example, may need further archetyping work.

As an example, I’ve quickly made a template that covers my understanding of the requirements of recording 24h blood pressure: Archetype Designer

@bna @LindaAulin @claudiaehr @amanda.herbrand should be able to point you to some template examples.

Thank you for this template! As it stands right now, the scope of our thesis project does not include us having to create our own templates, which is why we haven’t, but are instead looking for templates that are used in healthcare already.

@klarapersson I did a similar masters thesis, but we first came up with a language to query DICOM intead of directly mapping it to openEHR, if i remember it was first making these SR accessible in the first place and seeing how these fit into openEHR.

Most of the elements we introduced e.g. “Element” and “Cluster” are similar to openEHR and will help you when mapping into a Composition.

In general my experience is that SR are rarely used (at least where i asked around), so the trade off is questionable.

If i also remember correctly, SRs are not fixed to a “template” but super flexible, so taking existing openEHR templates and mapping that from SR seems to me a bit strange to me, maybe if there are fixed ones in Sectra. Otherwise you could introduce an ETL tooling that helps mapping into openEHR, that would be valuable.

Structured Imaging Reporting is starting to be used for high-value cases - e,g. Cancer imaging, and this actively being worked on both regionally and internationaly.

Also there is a lot of work on Structured pathology reporting. Some of these have been mapped to Sectra forms.

The Region Stockholm team are probably best places to help with pointing you to some example templates in both areas but bear in mind that both Structured imaging and pathology are very complex areas and still a bit immature from a modellng POV.
