Thanks to everyone who has sent in an abstract/short paper/poster submission for EHRCON25. We’re currently looking into publication options and are in discussion with Springer and JMIR. However, as always, we are faced with budgetary constraints are unless we’re able to secure a sponsor for publication, the options are:
a) Authors/their organisations meeting the cost of publication in an indexed journal, or
b) Free publication on the openEHR website.
Thanks everyone for your patience and understanding, feel free to share your views or suggestions here.
It’s quite normal that publication in an indexed journal comes with fees, that’s the standard model for most conference proceedings and special issues nowadays. Personally, I think it would be a shame if all the work that has gone into preparing abstracts and short papers ended up only on the openEHR website, because then the contributions wouldn’t be indexed (which is important for researchers ).
Also worth noting: if the material is posted on the website as “published,” it might then prevent authors from submitting an extended or revised version to a listed conference or journal later, since most publishers would consider it prior publication.
For that reason, option (a) would better preserve the scientific value and visibility of the contributions, even though it comes with some cost.
