ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (HEALTH INFORMATICS) AT THE NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (NTNU),

The Medical Faculty at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway, invites applications for an Associate Professorship in Medicine (Health Informatics) for four years. The position is placed at the Norwegian Centre of Electronic Patient Records (NSEP).

The Norwegian Centre of Electronic Patient Records is a centre of expertise at NTNU that does research and knowledge promotion on topics related to patient records systems. The Norwegian Research Council (NFR) has budgeted five million kroner per year for five years to strengthen and develop an interdisciplinary research group with competence in health, ICT, and social science fields. The centre was established in October 2003. About 20 PhD students work at the centre that are supported and guided by scientific personnel from several different institutes at NTNU. The centre is administratively located within the Faculty of Medicine.

The main goal of the centre is to conduct research that can contribute to the development and implementation of electronic patient record systems that in turn can simplify the working day for health personnel. Electronic health records is to be developed into a more functional tool for supporting the treatment of patients, improving collaboration amongst health professionals, and serving as a source of information for administrative routines, quality assurance, and research in health services. The centre's research also aims to contribute to strengthening patients' self-care and collaboration with health services by improving their access to their own records.

The applicant will be part of an interdisciplinary team that works on various projects concerning development and use of electronic health record systems along with aims for the centre put forward by the board and the Norwegian Research Council. Functionality of electronic health record systems, professional content and adaptation for research and quality assurance are main challenges that the applicant is expected to take part in. The applicant must have a proven track record in research in health informatics that includes one or more of the following fields; quality assurance, logic and decision theory in medicine, coding and classification, clinical communication and information management in health care. Training and broad experience with research methods is required. Weight will also be put on clinical experience.

The successful candidate should have published extensively internationally, preferably within one of the above-mentioned topics and have a well-developed national/international scholarly network. The candidate is expected to publish in collaboration with researchers and research fellows at NSEP, to undertake and coordinate empirical work, to initiate research projects and grant applications, and to take part in seminars and work shops within the research centre internally and externally as representative of the research centre.

The applicant must have a PhD or similar scientific competence within medicine or an equivalent health care education.

The individual work of the applicant must document scientific expertise in one or more parts of the discipline, particularly the specialist fields this position has specific responsibility for. Weight will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work.

Weight will be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on documented pedagogical material, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, experience from supervising masters-level students and doctoral candidates, and teaching as well as other pedagogical matters. The evaluation will consider both the quality and the scope.

Academic staff who are employed without having a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses.

The applicants that have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trial lecture

The position is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff in the Department. He/she is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching programme, including continuing education. He/she is to supervise masters students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. He/she must agree to participate in administrative work.

He/she is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at the University.

Newly-appointed staffs in academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language are expected to acquire knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years of appointment at a standard equivalent to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided by the Department of Applied Linguistics. NTNU offers such courses.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

A research position is remunerated according to wage levels 54 to 75 on the Norwegian government salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 378.200 to NOK 558.700 a year. The position as Two per cent of the salary will be deducted as an obligatory premium to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
