Looking for an archetype for recording VAS scale. Searching suggested that there used to be a CLUSTER.Symptom-pain [Pain symptom] archetype in the international CKM.
I could only find it from the NEHTA CKM but not from the international one. Any thoughts on this?
Symptom/Sign, Published Archetype [Internet]. openEHR Foundation,
openEHR Clinical Knowledge Manager [cited: 2016-09-27]. Available
This has
Severity rating, Quantity, Optional, repeating
Numerical rating scale representing the overall severity of the symptom or sign.
Comment: Symptom severity can be rated by the individual by recording
a score from 0 (ie symptom not present) to 10.0 (ie symptom is as
severe as the individual can imagine). This score can be represented
in the user interface as a visual analogue scale. The data element has
occurrences set to 0..* to allow for variations such as 'maximal
severity' or 'average severity' to be included in a template.
Property: Qualified real
which should fit your requirement.

VAS is a quantification of the severity of a symptom, which could be pain or other symptoms. When the international Symptom/Sign archetype was reviewed and published, the element “Severity rating” was included to cater for VAS or other severity scales. For now, there are no plans to make a specific archetype for pain in the international space, as the generic Symptom/Sign archetype should support all generic requirements. The former (draft) Pain specialisation of the (draft) Symptom archetype was rejected for this reason.
As per Ian and Silje’s comments the CLUSTER.symptom-pain in the NEHTA CKM (actually the Australian Digital Health Agency now!) is out of date. Pain VAS is now managed within the CLUSTER.symptom_sign archetype that has been reviewed and published.
In addition there are a few standalone pain-related instruments/scores/scales that have been added to the international CKM in the past week or so, proposed by a colleague in Argentina. So if you are actually looking for scales to record pain out of the context of a symptom, eg as part of an OBS chart then these might also be useful for consideration, especially the ‘Oucher’. They are modelled as OBSERVATIONs as they are frequently used as standalone clinical assessments.
